A man in his 30s employed at an agricultural farm in Essex County has become the first local migrant worker and the youngest person in the region to die due to COVID-19.
The man was diagnosed with the disease on May 21 and died on Saturday, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed reported on Monday morning. He had been self-isolating in a motel, but called for help and was transported to hospital when his condition worsened. He later passed away.

The man arrived to Canada from Mexico in mid-February. He had no pre-existing medical conditions.
“My team and I are truly sorry for the death of this young temporary foreign worker. Every life lost is a tragic loss for our community,” Ahmed said during the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s morning news conference. “These deaths are not just a number to me or to anyone here on my team. It is a person, it’s a loved one with a family. I want to express my true sympathies to the family of this temporary foreign worker and to others who have lost their loved ones to COVID.”
